Raku Workshop at the Jersey Clay Society!

October 17th 10AM-2PM

This workshop is for CURRENT students and members of Lore Ceramics in the September-October 2026 Semester only.

$120/ per person for 4 hour workshop & 3 fired pieces

How it will work:

Each participant can bring up to 3 bisque-fired pieces to Raku Fire using whatever techniques (see below)they want to try. Pieces should be less than 10" in any direction. You will purchase your Raku Clay for $2/ pound from Lore Ceramics. Pieces will need to be put on the shelf to be bisque-fired by Sunday, Oct 4th.

You must use Raku Clay or your piece will break during this process.

On Oct 17th: Bring your bisque fired pieces to the Jersey Clay Society in Wharton and at 10AM we will fire up the kiln and fire everyone's pieces! This workshop will be outdoors, please dress appropriately. Make sure you wear closed toe shoes and nothing hanging off your clothes.

Firing Options:

Raku Glazes: You can apply glaze to your Raku piece like normal. After pulling your piece from the kiln, you will place in a metal bucket full of burnable materials and cover, creating a reduction environment. Lore Ceramics will have a selection of brushing glazes, Jersey Clay Society will have more available. Tape resist is popular as bare clay will turn black through this process.

Naked Raku: Leave your piece bare after the bisque fire, then when removing from the hot kiln use feathers, hair or other materials to burn on to the surface and leave marks.

Obvara: A liquid fermented yeast mixture. When you remove your piece from the hot kiln and dunk into the liquid, you create brown and sepia toned markings creating a very ancient looking piece.
